Jerry Ahmed Shaib, the parliamentary representative for Weija-Gbawe, sent a formal request to Governs Kwame Agbodza, the minister responsible for roads, asking for immediate maintenance on the Weija Junction-Mallam Overpass segment of the Kasoa-Cape Coast route. According to MyJoyOnline, the letter points to deteriorating pavement and heavy traffic as the main issues. The MP noted that extensive potholes are causing significant delays for thousands of people who use the road every day.
The report highlights a drastic increase in travel time. What is normally a three-minute drive between Weija Junction and Mallam now requires more than two hours for drivers attempting to navigate the damaged areas. Shaib described the highway as a vital connection for residents in Weija-Gbawe, Kasoa, Winneba, and other Accra districts, including Korle-Bu and Dansoman. This makes the poor condition a major concern for local residents and commercial transport operators alike.
Healthcare access is another area of concern raised in the correspondence. The MP suggested that the congestion creates extra challenges for patients traveling to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and the Cocoa Clinic. He indicated that these delays are particularly problematic during emergencies when quick access to medical care is essential for patient outcomes.
Shaib asked the minister to instruct the Ghana Highway Authority and other agencies to examine the damaged section quickly. He proposed that immediate fixes should be paired with long-term solutions to stop potholes from returning. Specifically, he recommended installing proper drainage systems and resurfacing the road to address the root causes of the deterioration. The appeal was made on behalf of constituents who are still dealing with the consequences of the bad road surface.
The MP expressed hope that the minister will prioritize the issue to lessen the burden on commuters and enhance safety on this busy corridor. The letter emphasizes the need for both quick relief and structural improvements to keep the highway usable for the long term. MyJoyOnline noted that the MP believes the minister will take the necessary steps to improve traffic flow and reduce hardship for daily travelers.
