UAE officials and leaders from the International Monetary Fund and World Bank Group finalized a deal in Bangkok for the Gulf capital to host the 2029 annual financial forum. Khaleej Times reported that the signing occurred during the 2026 sessions in Thailand. This marks the second occasion the country has hosted the event, with Dubai holding the previous edition in 2003. MyJoyOnline noted that the governing boards selected Abu Dhabi in April 2026 for the October 2029 dates.
The upcoming gatherings will convene finance ministers, central bank governors, and policymakers from 191 member states. According to Khaleej Times, attendees will evaluate global economic challenges, growth projections, and strategies for sustainable development. The event builds on the UAE’s existing partnership with both institutions, aiming to solidify Abu Dhabi’s position as a hub for multilateral economic dialogue.
Mohamed bin Hadi Al Hussaini, the UAE’s minister of state for financial affairs, described the selection as a major milestone. He indicated that the choice reflects international trust in the nation’s infrastructure and capacity to manage significant international events. Khaled Mohamed Balama, the central bank governor, added that the decision validates the strength of the country’s banking and regulatory systems.
Ajay Banga, head of the World Bank Group, expressed enthusiasm for the UAE’s role as the next host city. He emphasized that the meetings focus on development impact and large-scale financing. Kristalina Georgieva, the IMF’s managing director, stated that the country has evolved into a key center for financial innovation and cooperation. Both leaders highlighted the value of holding these sessions outside the Washington, D.C. headquarters.
The agreement aligns with the UAE’s strategic goal of deepening international ties. The central bank plans to utilize its expertise in digital finance and monetary stability to shape the 2029 discussions. Officials believe the event will further demonstrate the country’s readiness to support inclusive global economic growth.
