President Bola Tinubu has cautioned the political class in Ekiti State against declaring interest in the 2030 governorship contest too early, arguing that such moves could create internal contradictions and derail governance. According to Punch, the President made this admonition during a special thanksgiving service for Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s second term, which was held at the Anglican Cathedral of Emmanuel in Ado Ekiti on Sunday.

Tinubu, represented at the event by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, appealed to politicians to prioritise the state’s broader interests over individual entitlements. He described early declarations as a distraction that could undermine the governor’s focus on delivering dividends to the people. The President emphasised that loyalty to the current administration is essential for maintaining stability in the state.

Governor Oyebanji, who was inaugurated for a second term on Friday at the Ekitiparapo Pavilion, pledged to focus on industrialisation and shared prosperity. Punch reported that the Governor stated his first term established the necessary infrastructure to attract investors, while the second term would leverage these foundations to create employment. He noted that achieving this goal requires cooperation from traditional rulers and residents, particularly regarding land release for industrial projects.

The Governor acknowledged the weight of his electoral mandate, citing the 87.7% of total votes he received in the previous election. He promised to serve with humility and to maintain the momentum of his administration. The Bishop of the Diocese of Ekiti, Rt. Rev. Andrew Ajayi, also addressed the congregation, urging the Governor to view his position as a stewardship held in trust for the people and to maintain integrity throughout his tenure.

Dignitaries present at the thanksgiving service included former Governors Niyi Adebayo, Ayodele Fayose, and Segun Oni, as well as several members of the National Assembly. Vice President Kashim Shettima had represented the President at the earlier Friday inauguration, presiding over the ceremony alongside Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The event marked the formal beginning of Oyebanji’s new term, with a stated commitment to inclusive development and improved living standards for Ekiti citizens.
