Caleb Nii Okai, widely known as Nii the Menace, has completed a 240-kilometre endurance run from Accra to Kumasi in Ghana. According to MyJoyOnline, the seven-day challenge was undertaken to promote breast cancer awareness and emphasize the importance of early medical screening for women. The journey began at the Balme Library at the University of Ghana in Legon and concluded at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi.
During the run, Okai covered an average of 35 to 40 kilometres each day. MyJoyOnline reported that he interacted with communities along the route to spread awareness about breast health. The athlete stated that his primary goal was to motivate mothers and sisters to visit hospitals for screening, believing that his physical effort would inspire others to prioritize their health. He described his passion for women’s health as a driving force, noting that their presence is fundamental to society.
The physical challenge was accompanied by significant environmental and logistical hurdles. MyJoyOnline detailed that Okai faced hilly terrain, harsh weather conditions, and dangerous roads. At various points during the seven days, he struggled with a lack of drinking water and intense physical pain. Despite these difficulties, he maintained that the purpose behind the run kept him from abandoning the challenge, even when stopping seemed like a viable option.
This Accra-to-Kumasi run is part of a series of endurance challenges Okai has undertaken in recent months, including a previous journey to Cape Coast. MyJoyOnline noted that away from running, the athlete has interests in boxing, finance, and economics. The latest challenge comes at a time when late diagnosis remains a significant public health concern regarding breast cancer in Ghana. Okai hopes that the message from his journey will continue to travel beyond the physical finish line, encouraging more women to seek timely medical care.
