Karnataka secured a commanding lead in their Ranji Trophy Group B match against Saurashtra on Monday, following a second-day performance anchored by Manvanth Kumar's maiden first-class century. According to ThePrint, the 22-year-old left-hander scored 135 runs off 214 balls, helping his team reach 342 all out after they had started the day in a precarious position of 281 for eight. Kumar's innings included 11 boundaries and six sixes, with ThePrint noting that he displayed impressive footwork throughout his stay at the crease. He reached his century off 147 balls before being dismissed by Saurashtra spinner Parth Bhut, who took five wickets for 89 runs. Abhilash Shetty also contributed to the chase, adding 14 not out and helping Kumar raise 146 runs for the ninth wicket.
Following the batting effort, Karnataka's bowlers exerted pressure on the visiting top order. ThePrint reported that Saurashtra began their innings confidently, with openers Hetvik Kotak and Harvik Desai adding 110 runs. However, after Desai fell to pacer Vidwath Kaverappa, Karnataka made significant inroads into the middle order. Left-arm pacer Abhilash Shetty took the wickets of Chirag Jani and Jay Gohil in consecutive overs, reducing the visitors to 115 for three. Kotak later fell to Vysakh Vijayakumar, leaving Saurashtra at 128 for four. Seasoned batters Arpit Vasavada and Prerak Mankad helped the team see the day through, finishing at 164 for four.
The match, held at Alur in Bengaluru, saw Karnataka establish a clear advantage. ThePrint detailed that Saurashtra is now trailing by 178 runs. While other matches in Group B were also in progress, such as Hyderabad's lead over Andhra in Vijayawada and Punjab's dominance over Chhattisgarh in Mullanpur, the focus in Bengaluru remained on Karnataka's comprehensive performance. The combination of Kumar's batting stability and the pace attack's effectiveness in dismantling the opposition's top order set the tone for the remainder of the contest, leaving the visitors with a difficult task to recover.
