Joseph Ayodele, a first-class Computer Science graduate from Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Kaduna State, has been named the institution's overall best graduating student. According to Punch, the announcement occurred during his convocation in 2026, a moment that surprised Ayodele despite his earlier confidence in leading his department and faculty. He noted that he had expected to be recognized at the faculty level but was unprepared for the university-wide distinction, especially after observing his cumulative grade point average drop to 4.92, which he feared might allow a rival from the Faculty of Engineering to surpass him.

Ayodele’s path to this achievement was marked by a six-year duration for a standard four-year course, a delay he attributed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities strikes and the COVID-19 pandemic. He gained admission in October 2019 but did not resume classes until January 2020, finally graduating in December 2025. During this period, he watched younger juniors from private and state-owned universities complete their degrees in 2023, a fact that occasionally discouraged him. However, he maintained a consistent study routine, dedicating two to three hours daily to reading and utilizing online tutorial videos to grasp complex concepts. His academic record includes a 5.0 GPA in every semester except his first and final years, where he recorded 4.68 and 4.71 respectively.

Before settling on Computer Science, Ayodele aimed to become a military officer through the National Defence Academy. He applied twice, in 2020 and 2021, passing the written examinations but failing to secure a final spot in both attempts. This experience led him to focus entirely on his university studies, where he adopted a strategy of prioritizing every course equally to avoid underrating any subject. He described his approach as one of consistency, noting that he remained about 90 percent consistent in his study habits even during stressful periods.

Looking ahead, Ayodele is currently undergoing his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and is exploring fully funded scholarship opportunities for a master’s programme. He plans to follow this with a PhD, aiming to continue his academic trajectory. In his advice to younger students, he emphasized the importance of self-belief, early preparation, and discipline, suggesting that success begins with a positive mindset and sustained effort.
