Transformers and Rectifiers (India) Ltd (TARIL) is moving forward with a strategic expansion into the United Kingdom through its subsidiary, Maxwell Grid Transformers (UK) Private Ltd. According to The Hindu BusinessLine, the Ahmedabad-based power equipment manufacturer intends to initially focus on sales and customer support before potentially moving to local assembly and full manufacturing. Managing Director and Chief Executive Satyen Mamtora stated that the decision to build a manufacturing facility will be triggered by annual orders of approximately 2,000 to 5,000 MVA from the UK, Europe, and neighboring markets.
The company’s board has authorized a £10 million capital injection into the UK entity, which was incorporated in September 2026. The Hindu BusinessLine reported that TARIL plans to deploy this capital by the end of October, aiming to have the subsidiary fully operational by the close of the December quarter. The Indian parent will retain a 51 per cent ownership stake. The approved scope of work includes the repair and manufacture of transformers, alongside the distribution of TARIL products and the trading of related components, though the initial phase will prioritize servicing and sales across the UK and Europe.
Mamtora indicated that the UK operations are projected to generate revenue in the upcoming financial year, contributing roughly 2 to 3 per cent of the group's consolidated income in the medium term. The subsidiary will target a diverse client base, including utility companies, grid operators, renewable energy firms, data centre operators, and industrial entities. This expansion aligns with TARIL’s broader international footprint, which extends across more than 40 countries and includes over 18,000 installed transformers globally. Exports currently represent about 8 per cent of the company’s revenue and approximately 15 per cent of its total order book.
The UK initiative coincides with TARIL’s ongoing domestic growth. The firm possesses over 75,000 MVA of production capacity and aims for a 90 per cent utilisation rate. Its Changodar site in Ahmedabad is slated to start commercial output around the Diwali festival, followed by upgrades to its extra-high-voltage plant at Moraiya. TARIL has earmarked roughly ₹150 crore for the Changodar project and between ₹900 and 1,000 crore for backward integration. Mamtora emphasized that converting current European discussions into firm contracts will dictate the pace at which the UK subsidiary evolves from a sales hub into a manufacturing base.
