Dubai Ambulance has introduced a specialized transport option for individuals with sensory needs, allowing families to arrange non-emergency hospital visits through the DubaiNow application. According to Khaleej Times, the initiative provides a tailored alternative for stable patients, including those with autism, who may find standard ambulance environments overwhelming. The service aims to reduce anxiety during the journey by offering a controlled and supportive environment.
Khowla Al Awadhi, a paramedic with the Dubai Corporation for Ambulance Services, described the vehicle modifications at the AccessAbilities Expo 2026. She noted that the rear section includes adjustable lighting and textured wall surfaces. Additionally, onboard toys are available to help soothe distressed riders. Al Awadhi explained that these tools allow medical staff to tailor their approach to each person’s specific triggers, rather than using a one-size-fits-all method. If visual adjustments do not settle the patient, crew members can use other items to lower the intensity of the situation.
The program also involves specialized training for the medical crews. Al Awadhi stated that Dubai Ambulance personnel have completed courses focused on interacting with individuals who have sensory disabilities. The level of care provided depends on the patient’s specific condition and whether immediate medical intervention is required or if the sensory aids are sufficient. A separate vehicle type is also available for those with physical disabilities, ensuring the right equipment is matched to the patient’s requirements.
To book a ride, users select the “Patient Transfer” function in the DubaiNow app and specify the need for a specialized vehicle. They then choose the sensory option and provide details about the patient’s diagnosis, along with the preferred date, time, and locations for pickup and drop-off. After submission, an ambulance team member contacts the family to finalize the logistics. Khaleej Times reported that this service was showcased at the eighth edition of the AccessAbilities Expo, held at the Dubai World Trade Centre from October 19 to 21.
