Pitso Mosimane, head coach of South Africa’s national football team, is evaluating a significant surplus of defensive talent for upcoming fixtures. According to Daily Maverick, the coach faces a selection challenge at centre-back, where several players compete for limited spots. This defensive depth contrasts with the team’s current shortage of a primary striker, a position Mosimane has previously described as lacking a lethal option.
The report identifies Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Ime Okon, and Olwethu Makhanya as the primary candidates for the central defensive role. All three players are under the age of 23. Makhanya recently transferred from Philadelphia Union to Rangers in Scotland, where he has established himself as a key starter. Okon plays for Hannover 96 in Germany, while Mbokazi is based in the United States. Daily Maverick notes that Mbokazi was absent from the team’s September matches due to fitness issues following a training injury with his club, Chicago Fire.
South African Football Association President Danny Jordaan stated that Mbokazi’s return would provide Mosimane with a "good problem" regarding the number of high-quality defenders available. Jordaan added that the team’s long-term objectives include qualifying for the 2030 World Cup. The national team is currently in the process of qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, having secured victories over Guinea and Eritrea in September.
Bafana Bafana’s next assignments are two Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Kenya. The first match is scheduled for Friday, 13 November, at Orlando Stadium, followed by a second match in Nairobi four days later. Kenya is currently coached by Benni McCarthy, South Africa’s all-time top goal scorer. Daily Maverick also highlights other defensive options, including Khulumani Ndamane and Aden McCarthy, the latter of whom recently scored in the European Champions League for his club, Sabah.
Mosimane has expressed a desire to build a culture of depth within the team, drawing comparisons to the South African rugby team’s ability to field players in any position. He noted that many players are performing well and require opportunities to demonstrate their capabilities. The coach emphasized the importance of stacking options to ensure that the team’s performance does not depend on a single individual.
