The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has sanctioned captain Cristiano Ronaldo with a 30-day suspension and a 255-euro fine following his departure from the national team camp. The disciplinary council announced the ruling on Monday, October 19, after investigating the 41-year-old forward's exit from the squad in Copenhagen, Denmark, on September 30. According to Punch, the council found Ronaldo guilty of an intentional disciplinary offence under Article 160(1) of the federation's regulations.
The dispute originated during the Nations League campaign, where Ronaldo was an unused substitute in Portugal's 2-1 victory over Norway on September 27. Nile Post reported that the forward subsequently learned he would not start against Denmark, prompting his walkout. In a statement, Ronaldo accused coach Jorge Jesus of twice "breaking his word," describing the situation as an "absolute breach of trust." Khaleej Times noted that proceedings were formally opened on October 9, two days after the initial reports of the incident.
The FPF's decision took into account the "remorse shown" by Ronaldo in his apology, as well as his historical contributions to the sport. Nile Post added that the forward submitted his curriculum vitae, including his awards and achievements, as part of his defence. Although the ruling did not specify which matches the suspension would cover, BBC Sport reported that the ban takes effect from the day of the Denmark match, meaning Ronaldo has already served 19 days of the sanction.
Portugal is scheduled to face Denmark again on November 14, followed by a match against Wales three days later. FPF president Pedro Proenca expressed a "strong desire" for Ronaldo to return to the national team once the matter is resolved. Punch quoted Proenca describing the captain as one of the most important figures in Portuguese football. Ronaldo, who has scored 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal, remains a key asset for the team despite the recent friction with the coaching staff.
