AstraZeneca Pharma India is transferring its registered office from Karnataka to Maharashtra, a change that signals a major adjustment to the firm’s operational base in the country. The Hindu BusinessLine reported that the multinational drugmaker recently opened its new corporate headquarters in Mumbai, an event attended by the state’s chief minister. Shareholders had given their consent to this transfer back in May, notifying stock exchanges of the decision to move the legal domicile to the new state.

The new facility covers 25,600 square feet and will accommodate approximately 300 staff members from various departments, including strategy, marketing, and human resources. A spokesperson for the firm explained that being closer to major healthcare institutions, partners, and financial hubs will allow the company to better meet local medical demands. This proximity is intended to foster deeper collaborations and broaden access to innovative treatments, marking a new growth phase for the organization.

Although the headquarters are moving, The Hindu BusinessLine noted that Bengaluru will remain a critical site for global operations. The company’s commercial sales team continues to operate nationwide, while the new Mumbai base will support segments like oncology and rare disease. Praveen Rao Akkinepally, the country president, stated that this enhanced presence in Mumbai improves the ability to engage with partners across the healthcare sector. The firm employs over 5,000 people in the country, with the shift supporting talent development and capability building.

This relocation follows the earlier decision to close the Bengaluru manufacturing plant, which was the company’s sole production unit in India. The Hindu BusinessLine indicated that the manufacturing license was surrendered in September, two years before its scheduled end. The move was part of a 2023 strategic review of the global supply network. AstraZeneca has launched over 25 new treatments in the last three years and is conducting roughly 80 global clinical trials locally, aiming to accelerate the development of new therapies.
