The Nigerian Army has concluded a five-day leadership development course for senior non-commissioned officers assigned to the 8 Division and Sector 2 of Operation Fansan Yamma. According to Punch, the initiative in Sokoto was intended to boost the operational effectiveness of these personnel as they navigate changing security conditions. The curriculum focused on modern leadership techniques to sharpen decision-making, crisis management, and coordination during joint security efforts.

Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, the acting deputy director of army public relations for the 8 Division, revealed these details in a Friday statement. He explained that the program reflected the chief of army staff’s vision for a professional and adaptable force. Major General Bemgba Koughna, the general officer commanding the 8 Division, viewed the course as a strategic step to build stronger leadership among senior non-commissioned officers. Koughna, who was represented by Brigadier General Ibrahim Gambari, emphasized that the training would help participants spot leadership gaps and boost service delivery.

The commander also advised the officers to transfer what they learned to their home units, arguing that strong discipline and professionalism are vital for mission success. He cautioned the group against poor social media habits, noting that clear communication is crucial for military operations. Major General James Gwaza Khalifa Myam, the director-general of the army resource centre, added that the syllabus targeted the specific needs of combat leadership. He stated that senior non-commissioned officers must show discipline and competence when facing tough operational situations.

Myam noted that the course aimed to enhance creativity, emotional intelligence, and critical thinking so personnel can handle complex security environments. The sessions covered topics such as leadership frameworks, inter-agency cooperation, and military law. A panel of experts, including retired Major General Ifiok Obot and Professor Okey Ikechukwu, facilitated the discussions. The army resource centre organized the event to promote professionalism and improve overall operational performance within the 8 Division.
