The fifth iteration of the Ajayi Elebire Elite Basketball Camp has identified 40 athletes from a group of 120 candidates who competed in a Lagos screening. According to Premium Times, the tryout occurred on Monday at the Ilupeju basketball court, where evaluators judged participants based on their athletic potential and technical skills. Punch confirmed that these selected individuals will travel to Ado-Ekiti for a training block scheduled between October 21 and 23.
Olalekan Ajayi, a former international player who founded the programme in memory of his father, explained that the event was relocated from Lagos to Ekiti last year to foster growth in his home state. Both publications noted that the camp is free for participants, with organisers covering costs for food, lodging, transport, and gear, including Nike and Jordan footwear. Ajayi emphasized that the goal extends beyond on-court performance, aiming to cultivate character traits such as discipline and responsibility. He stated, "Who you are as a person is more important to us." This philosophy reflects the camp's broader mission to prepare young people for life outside of sports.
Former national coach Scott Nnaji attended the screening and highlighted the importance of grassroots efforts for Nigerian basketball. He indicated that collaborating with the athletes over the next few days would enhance their game comprehension. Nnaji argued that consistent financial support for youth is vital for strengthening the country’s basketball culture. Scout Scott Adubato also praised the talent level, expressing his enthusiasm for helping develop the sport in Nigeria. He remarked that the initiative provides a valuable platform for kids to demonstrate their abilities.
Punch reported that the participants and coaching staff are set to reach Ado-Ekiti on October 20. The programme will feature both local and foreign instructors, culminating in an All-Stars game on October 23. Following this final match, the cohort is expected to leave the state on October 24. Ten of the 40 players will compete for scholarships upon completing the three-day schedule, marking a significant step in their athletic development.
