Seyi Makinde, the presidential candidate for the Allied Peoples Movement, has pledged to introduce tax breaks for entrepreneurs if he wins the 2027 Nigerian presidency. According to Punch, Makinde made these commitments while addressing party stakeholders at a regional gathering in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. He argued that his proposed RESET agenda would stimulate economic growth by encouraging private sector participation rather than relying solely on federal allocations.
Makinde criticized the current federal administration under President Bola Tinubu for prioritizing the taxation of lower-income citizens over the wealthy. He noted that his time as Oyo State Governor allowed him to increase internally generated revenue without raising taxes, a strategy he intends to replicate at the national level. He stated, "We will ensure that people have tax breaks," adding that his administration would move away from what he described as taxing poverty rather than wealth.
A central part of his address involved a financial dispute over Nigeria LNG dividend payments. Makinde claimed that the federal government has withheld approximately ₦250bn that is due to state and local governments. He argued that these dividends, which are deposited into the Federation Account, should be shared according to the constitution. He maintained that the records prove the federal government has been spending these funds unilaterally, despite previous assurances that the amounts were not one-off payments.
The APM National Leader, Bala Mohammed, who is also the Bauchi State Governor, urged voters to evaluate candidates based on their experience and vision. He expressed satisfaction with the party's reception in the South-South region, viewing it as a sign of support for their political platform. The meeting was attended by representatives from six states in the South-South zone, including Rivers and Delta.
Lawal Daura, the APM vice-presidential candidate, described the RESET agenda as a tool to restore dignity to Nigerians by addressing issues in education, security, and welfare. He emphasized that the party aims to break the cycle of political stagnation and ensure citizens feel honored and dignified. The party had previously held similar gatherings in the North-Central, North-West, and North-East regions to gauge support ahead of the general election.
